2011 Happy New Year

Happy New Year 2011

This is a great time

to reflect on the past year

and look forward to a fresh start in 2011

With the chill in the air a snowflake print place mat is perfect addition to this tablescape.

Who doesn't love a little "bling" for New Year
The candles are draped with vintage rhinestone belts. necklaces, and bracelets.

The cloche is full of vintage black ribbon and a paper flower
and adorned with "bling"

The French Chateau Flatware adds a crowning touch to the place setting.

My friend, Ruth, makes these vintage scrabble tiled decorative glass-charms.They work great to keep track of your glass.  If you are interested in having her make you custom charms, let me know by leaving a comment or by the "Contact Me " Button under the blog header and I will get you in contact with her.

This tablescape is dressed for a fun night on the town.

Vintage Christmas Girl Tablescape

I have been collecting Vintage Christmas Girls for many years.

This vintage Christmas girl is dressed for Christmas in a beautiful green ruffled dress with a red overcoat.  She has her white hat and gloves and a darling fur purse with a sprig of holly.  She can be singing a Christmas carol or reading a Christmas story.  I elevated her on  a poinsettia cake stand with the same colors as her outfit.  The cloche just gives her a place of honor.

The sugar and creamer that matched the cake stand adds more texture color to the setting.

I wanted you to be able to see the detail on the cake stand pedestal.

Some of the Christmas girls are angels.  She is dressed in her fur trimmed red coat.  She holds a lantern to light her way.

This darling Christmas girl has a cute holly detailed hat with a muff but she still can't be without her purse.

The Christmas girl's dress matches the dinner plate in this setting.

Who doesn't love presents?  This Christmas girl would be welcome any place.  See her red shoes peeking out of her ruffled dress.  The details are so great on these vintage pieces.

This Christmas girl has a Christmas card  and candy canes to share.

The contrast of this Christmas girl's dark green coat  with her red and white striped dress.  Again, her white fur purse and cute gloves and hat are so cute.

I used a vintage lace tablecloth to give a feminine touch to the Vintage Christmas Girl Tablescape.

If you are interested in purchasing any of the vintage Christmas Girls, just click on the Ebay Items for Sale under the blog header and you can check out the auctions. I have been collecting Vintage Christmas Girls for years and now they need a new home.   I will be adding more in the next few days.
Please feel free to ask any questions.

This candy cane salt and pepper shaker set has vintage style.
I used this mini gift bag with the "Legend of the Christmas Candy Cane" that I would love to share.

"A candy maker one Christmas many years before,
created a special candy as a testament to the Lord.

He made it with red and white this candy cane you see,
respresenting the blood Christ shed and His everlasting purity.

The shape is a shepherd's staff "Believe", the Lord proclaimed.
Turn the candy to a "J" as in our Lord Jesus' name.

So remember always at Christmas when you hang this candy cane,
the love and sacrifice our Lord gave as testament to His name."
I can't read who this poem is By

HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS SEASON

2010 Thanksgiving Day

The Thanksgiving Table is set.
The new silver turkey is taking center stage.

The table is layered with a taupe, cream and dark brown striped tablecloth, I used the underside of another tablecloth for texture in the tablescape....I love the underside print as well as the topside.
The placesetting begins with a cream woven round placemat, silver charger, chocolate "Fiesta" plate, and a turkey printed plate I purchased at HomeGoods.

The chocolate "Fiesta" flatware was wrapped in a cloth napkin and placed in stemware to allow more room on the table.

Silver Turkey Salt and Pepper Shakers accented with colorful acorns.

One of our all time favorite cookie is

Gretchen’s Sugar Cookies
1 c     Butter
1 c     Sugar
1       Egg
3 c     Flour
2 tsp  Baking Powder
1 tsp  Vanilla

The secret to this recipe is to :
Roll out with powdered sugar  (no flour)

I used for the first time a "SILPAT" I purchased from  Sur la Table (made in France)  It worked great!

Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.

Let cookies cool and then frost with:

Buttercream Frosting
1 lb   Powdered Sugar
¼ tsp Salt
¼ c   Milk
1 tsp Vanilla
1/3 c (2/3 stick) Soft Butter

Beat with electric mixer until smooth;  scrape bowl often

Our family loves this recipe and it is suitable for every holiday.

We,also, love the Tollhouse mini chocolate chip cookies recipe straight from the package..

In between all this work, we had to stop and play some games.
I want to thank my three grandsons, Eli, CJ, and Davis for helping me have a fun time preparing the food (and also tasting to make sure it would be good for our Thanksgiving meal)

And a big thanks to CJ for cleaning up because Grammy can not cook without making a BIG mess.

I WANT TO WISH YOU ALL A BLESSED AND FUN-FILLED
THANKSGIVING DAY
WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Pre- Thanksgiving Tablescape

Even though it isn't Thanksgiving Day, I like to give thanks everyday so I am using some Thanksgiving elements to make a tablescape for tonight's dinner.

The first layer is a runner that is white with black dots and black trim.
Also, I used the black iron stand with crystals to give height to the candle.

The place settings were layered with a white round straw placemat, silver charger, large black plate and a white salad plate because of the scalloped edge.

The small black plate with white dots is added to give a neutral palette for any accent color.

Since the table is black. it is hard to see that the white cloth napkin has a black ribbon edging.
The flatware is black with silver which gives it some bling.

The black crystal stemware keeps the palette neutral.

This is where any color can be used to accent.

Since it is close to Thanksgiving, the battery operated ORANGE candle
with frosted fruit gives the centerpiece a punch of color.

The glittered pumpkin and more frosted fruit adds more sparkle.

Using the brightly colored foil turkey gives some whimsy.

A few falling leaves anchor the tablescape together.

Pulling all the elements together gives a simple but cheerful tablescape.

This setting could be used for Thanksgiving Day but I chose to use it as a Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner.
I am setting at least 12 Thanksgiving tables for an event this weekend.  I posted about it last year if you want to check it out click here.
I haven't had time to set my Thanksgiving table yet but I purchased a new turkey this year so come back for an introduction.

I'm Thankful for all of you that take time to read and

Gail's "Rachel Ashwell" Inspired Girls Night In

My girlfriend gadabouts and I marked our calendars for the Remnants of the Past  antique show in Nipomo California at the beginning of October.  Beverly and Sandi have their birthdays then so we decided to head over for our anxiously anticipated adventure.  Sally, Linda and Ruth went too.  Cindi couldn't go but she was there in spirit since we went in her van.

We did have to get up before dawn to make it when the show first opened. We didn't want miss a minute of the fun.

There is a vendor at the show that produces these pumpkins with sayings on them.  So unique.

One of the highlights of the show was a book signing event with Rachel Ashwell of Shabby Chic.

Sally was having Rachel sign her book

Rachel shared her newest book and told of the journey she was on while publishing "Shabby Chic Interiors".  She was very personal and we felt like we had known her for years.  I guess we really have known about her for years because I mentioned that I had video recorded all her Shabby Chic shows on Style Network many years ago.   What happened to all our great decorating shows we use to watch?  Anyway, my friends said "We need to get together to  watch some of those shows so if you furnish the entertainment ...  we will bring the food" so that is what inspired our get-together last Monday night at my house.

I have a painted black dining table so I knew that was not going to work for a "Shabby Chic" tablescape so I layered a solid white tablecloth then a cream lace tablecloth (for the petticoat) and then I used a pink crocheted tablecloth that I purchased from The Tattered House at the Remnants of the Past show.

Since I have all of Rachel's books, they needed to be the base for the design on the table.

Since we would be seated on both sides of the table, I turned every other book to the spine side.

I chose a silver charger with a pale green dinner plate and vintage Homer Laughlin "Pink Rose" bowls.
This grape patterned silverware is so beautifully detailed, I wanted to include it.

The tablescape has items that remind me of the "Shabby Chic" look.  For instance, the vintage floral vase with the porcelain flowers.  The sheer pale pink gloves with just a touch of rhinestones and the vintage pale pink necklace with a beautiful clasp and pendant make a beautiful backdrop for the pink high heel salt and pepper shakers.

I had to include the pink crystal stemware and the vintage pink cloth napkins with the green crystal napkin rings.  The vintage salt and pepper shakers with the hand painted roses just add
another element of Shabby Chic.

Since it was a "Girl's Night In", I had to include my antique beaded pink drawstring purse and the antique comb set painted by Christie Repasy.
Just a sneak preview....I will be featuring a post on Christie in the near future.

The hand painted pink rose teapot, creamer and sugar had to be included.

There are so many details that I think I will just give you an overall look.
This is my version of Shabby Chic because I don't think Rachael would have used so many items but sometimes for me.....more is better.

As you can see in the background, my house is decorated in Fall colors so it was a little strange adding all this pink and pastel colors.... I have done a Fall table in soft pastels so maybe that can be another post.

The three rose covered paper lanterns hung from the chandelier.

Several years ago, my friend Beverly at My Sew Sweet Studio made these slipcovers for my dining room chairs out of  my vintage chenille bedspreads.

My vintage pastel chenille covered dress form and crinoline slip had to be dressed for dinner.

Since we were having buffet style, I decorated my counter for the food.

In Rachel's style, I mismatched the tea cups and saucers.

I had to use my Rachel matches I purchased at her Shabby Chic store in
Santa Monica California many years ago to light the rose printed candle.
Since the matches have a pink tip, I only use them for special occasions.

I don't know if you noticed but I did find some fresh roses from my daughter's yard to replace the silk flowers. .

The guests (Beverly, Linda, Me (Gail), Ruth, Sally, Sandi) arrived so let the video and feasting begin.

You never know what or who will inspire your next decorating project.

Thank you Rachel
for your inspirational talk and sharing from your heart.
